A Tree for all Gardens
Gardening with Kathy

I am often asked which sort of tree I can recommend for a home garden. Without a doubt, my first choice would be a Crabapple (Malus). These smallish trees add colour, form and texture to any garden, and also, you can make the most delicious Crabapple Jelly from their fruit. There are several types of Crabapple - here are just a few;-

Malus floribunda flowers in Spring with the most wonderful pink blossoms aging to white, so that, at any one time, the tree is covered in multi-coloured flowers. The tree is round and dense, with long arching branches.

Malus ioensis 'Plena' is broad spreading with a rounded crown. It covers itself with masses of pale pink double blossoms, which have a mild fragrance.

Malus 'Golden Hornet' is a small upright tree with pendulous spreading branches. The flowers are white and small, however, it produces quantities of golden fruit which make a prominent show against the green foliage.

Malus Ballerina 'Maypole' is a columnar variety which means it grows tall and thin. It has beautiful bronze leaves and decorative purple flowers, followed by purple fruit.

The best thing about all crabapples is that they grow very well without a lot of supplementary watering. The ones in my garden only get watered by rainfall, and they are thriving. Next time you are looking for a tree - try a Crabapple!

Happy gardening.
