The Magic of February
Gardening with Michael

February in Australia is an active time in the garden. There are a range of tasks that can be enjoyed.

You can begin by sowing seeds of English peas, mustard greens, turnips, beets, kale, kohlrabi, spinach, lettuce, radishes, carrots outdoors and in well tilled soil..

While indoors you can work with tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and okra in pots that have good drainage and indirect sunlight.

Plan for the end of the monthas it isa a good time to incorporate manure or other quality fertilizer into the garden soil in preperation for planting in 3-4 weeks. A general guide is to use 20 lbs. of cow manure per 1000 sq. feet.

Herb seeds can be strated indoors in a protected area. Such as basil borage, chives, parsley, summer savoury, and thyme. These will need as much light as possible.

To ensure a good crop of Fall-planted strawberries make sure they are getting sufficent water so they produce quality fruit.

Just remember to factor in the weather for your own safety and comfort. Stay rehydrated and wear a sensible hat.

Happy gardening,
Michael
