The Passion of Spring

In Australia the Seasons can be extreme depending where you live. So there will be a range of advice for each region you might live. That and the fact that while it is Spring in Australia it would of course not be Spring elsewhere. Here are a list of unusual suggestions that might give an added zest to your Spring planting and gardening plans.

  1. Diapers? Placing a diaper (clean please) at the bottom of a potted plant may sound odd but the way in which the structure of the diaper holds water will help keep moisture in when you live in an arid region.
  2. Wine Corks as a corker of an idea to space out plants as you plant them. They are easy to come by (I enjoy emptying the bottle so I can have plenty) and they are biodegradable.
  3. Boiling Water to the rescue. Many gardeners will avoid the usual chemicals to deal with weeds. I have found that pouring boiling water on top of the weed will have a quick and clean affect in getting rid of them.
  4. Plastic Fork so unwanted cats will get the point. One of the challenges to gardeners is to keep their planting safe from feline visitors who tend to see the area as an extended bathroom. Pushing plastic forks into the soil, tongs side up, will make it difficult for cats to easily venture in and dig up plantings.
  5. Cinnamon coated roots. When moving and replanting it is important to keep the roots clean and fresh. Sadly many replants succumb to fungus of the roots. It has been suggested that dipping the roots on a mixture of water and cinnamon will help to keep the roots healthy and clean while the plant gets established.

This has been just a quick brief foray into unusual gardening tips. Maybe you have some you would like to share/ If so please be sure to email me so I can share them next Spring.

Happy gardening,
Michael
