Keeping Guinea Pigs

Why Guinea Pigs ?
Just to be clear to begin with. Guinea pigs are larger than hamsters and gerbils. Also, Guinea pigs are herbivores (meaning they feed on plants), while hamsters and gerbils are omnivores (meaning they feed on both plants and animals, like insects). Keeping a guinea pig as a pet is not a casual pet to have. They need lots of attention. They can turn nasty if they are ignored or mistreated. So think earnestly about adopting a guinea pig as a pet.

Guinea Pig Food:
Being herbivores guinea pigs will need a good range of food. From fresh vegetable and fruit to pellets. As well as a good supply of clean drinking water. This will need to be refreshed at least once a day. Just keep in mind the adage; if you wouldn't drink it then don't make your pet drink it. Diversity in food will keep your little furball happy and healthy.

Guinea Pigs Habitat:
Because they are little furballs they will need a habitat that is kept clean and filled with a place to sleep and a place to move around and explore. Your little furball will show you they are happy when they hop up and down making a funny noise. That is that true sign of a happy and content guinea pig. So a nice spacious clean environment will go a long ways in ensuring your furball is thriving.

It's important to keep in mind the suitability of objects placed in the habitat. Anything that can flake off paint or may break apart when chewed by an inquisitive guinea pig is not a healthy addition.

Guinea Pigs Toys:
Just like any other pet, guinea pigs like to have fun. That and eat and drink. So you will discover at the local pet store that the majority of toys for them have something to do with food. Whether it's a small ball that drops food as they push it around their enclosure. Or, as depicted in the photo, a small carrousel that food hangs off so they can have fun chewing on it. They also like things like bridges, ramps and obstacles to run around. All perfect additions to their habitat.

Like I said earlier, guinea pigs are furballs of personality and character that will need constant attention. So make sure you are ready to give them all the love you can. The reward will be their love given in return. That and their little hopping chirping sounds.
