The Pillars of the Earth

Author: Ken Follett
Publisher: Macmillan
ISBN: 0451166892
Release Date: 1989

Review: Ken Follet's novel takes the reader through a intertwined history of Old England. With cameo mentions of some of the countries unique folklore characters. Although it is based roughly on the life and times of those associated with a Monastery and Cathedral, it is not a theological or spiritual book.

The novel was made into a TV movie by a German-Canadian group. This was done in association with Ridley Scott's, Scott Free Films. With a release date of July 23, 2010. Perhaps the promotional write up expresses the book best.

"Nothing is Sacred"

The story line starts with the journey of Tom the Builder and later changes to his Son. As the main characters live, work, love and survive in constantly changing times. Where one mans passion can become another mans burden. Like many such historical novels it skirts on the edge of believability at times. Giving way to plot texture over historical validity. Over all it's a good read. Somewhat heavy at times but certainly entertaining. The characters are believable and in some ways easy to identify with.
