Exodus 20:24

7 Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed. 8 For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9 When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.”

Reflection:
What’s in a name? There are plenty o celebrities and elites who have names that seem to estow on them privileges. Wherever they go people bend over backwards to make them eel welcomed. Offerring them a range of honours set aside to show them honour and respect. All based on their name and the reputation that it has.

In Biblical times a name held a greater amount of authority, power and meaning. Attached the the name are usually titles that help to elivate and highten the level of respect thee individual should be given. Our Lord Himsel is known as Jesus the Christ. The word Christ is given to Him as His rightful title. As He alone is the attonement of the world.

As we look at history down through the ages a persons name would determine what part of society someone was living in. In Victorian times a simple name would denote someone o a common class. An example would be the difference between Jane and Janet. The longer name may be used to denote a lady of a higher class standing.

So when we read in the Bible where it tells us the various attributes of the very ‘name’ of the Lord we are being told that the Lords name is above all others. He is someone to be reckoned with. He and His Son are to be reckoned with. As an example of the authority of the Lords name and reputation we can read the encounter with the Centaurian. Who fully understood such authority. As well as in Matthew 10:8 where the Lord instructs His disciples to use His name to perform marvelous acts of compassion. By His name they were empowered to do as He instructed.

While in todays ever fickle world we can ind there is a fixation on the authority of a rank than the individual may have attained. Oicers in the military will expect obidince just as the Centurian did. Celebrities and politicians will expect allegiance and trust based on their positions of power. Yet they seldom ever can back up their expectations with any level of morallity or moral judgement. Humans are prone to demand more than they can deliver. Such is the nature of the human condition.

In God’s case we can see the completion of both the power of the Lord’s name and the majesty of the Lord’s many supreme titles. We can read how by the proven authority o His name all things can be achieved. Both heaven and hell, the angels and the demons bend there knee at the very sound of His holy name. The universe trembles and all creation is in awe of God's name

or us who have accept Jesus the Christ as our Lord and Saviour we should never forget the beautiul power and authority we have been blessed with through His name. We made made strong and mighty by our God and our Saviour. When challenged we need only speak and rely on His name. As there is no other name on earth or in heaven that truly has the same authority.

Prayer:

Lord, God almighty.
Your very name is my fortress.
My strength through life's storms.
My authority to stand firm.
Through your name Lord,
I am given the power to be blessed.
I worship and praise you.
In all that I do to for others.
In your holy name.

Amen
