Mark 6:8:
"And commanded them that they should take nothing for their
journey, save
a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse:"
Message:
It can be difficult to understand this verse in today's terms.
As we do not have the same social concept of Hospitality. In the
Middle East and many regions close by, it was customary to welcome
visitors. As one never knew if such a visitor would bring great
fortune with them. There was also the belief that many were secretly
visited by messengers of the Gods. To test them and see if they
were worthy of blessings.
So the idea of sending the followers out with little is understandable.
If not somewhat amazing in how Spartan there resources seemed.
But I believe this is where the Lords deeper Understanding of
human nature can be seen. As each person needed to enter the experience
with as little clutter as could be taken. Otherwise there would
be a chance for some to say they travelled not by the Holy Spirit.
Nor by the hospitality of those they visited. But by their own
resources.
There are also many other reasons for them to leave behind the
usual clutter most tend to over pack with when travelling. One
of which is the clutter of life and memories. To have travelled
weighed down with such clutter could easily have distracted them.
Reminding them of other things. Other priorities.
God provided for their needs through the generosity of those he
wished to the word to shared with. He
knew their hearts and knew the journey would be a blessing for
each of them. And that only a light load could help them towards
an enlightened heart.
Prayer:
Lord, my life can seem encumbered with the clutter of this World.
And my heart at times seems weighed down with the cares of so
many distractions. That it becomes difficult to hear your voice.
I pray in your blessed name that I may be able to separate myself
from all such distractions. That I may be able to once again walk
with you on my journey. With you as my true source of strength
and assurance of rest. Help me to let go of the clutter and cling
only to you. My Lord and Saviour.
Amen
